Whipped Coffee: Worth The Hype?

Whipped coffee has taken over the internet, appearing all over Instagram and Tik Tok. But what even is it? Is it worth the amount of fame it’s getting, or are we all just bored from quarantine?

Whipped coffee, otherwise known as Dalgona Coffee, is a really simple recipe- it’s a 1:1:1 ratio of sugar, instant coffee, and warm water. The recipe I used, which was from Tasty, used 2 tbsp of each. With this recipe you can use either a whisk or a hand-mixer, and personally I recommend using a hand-mixer. I had to use just a whisk for part of making this because my family was still busy with work and school and the hand-mixer was a little distracting, but it took way longer and was super exhausting. I also used decaf instant coffee, partly because I was wondering if it would work, and also because this recipe uses a LOT of coffee. I was a little worried when I first started mixing because it wasn’t whipping up, but slowly it started to change to a caramel color and started to look fluffy. After about 5-10 minutes it looked like it was the right texture.

I was really surprised at how it turned out. Rather than being light and fluffy, the whipped coffee felt sticky and almost like toffee. After doing some research, I learned that the name Dalgona comes from a Korean honeycomb candy by the same name, because of its toffee-like consistency and color. I topped the whipped coffee over a cup of milk and ice, took a few pictures for its aesthetic, and then stirred the milk and coffee together.

I had slightly higher expectations for the taste. You could taste that it was made with instant coffee (which is usually made with just leftover coffee grounds) and the extremeness of the sugar and bitterness of the coffee was not good. I did drink it though, because even if the taste was a little off putting, it wasn’t terrible. Would I make it again? I’m honestly not sure. However, I would recommend giving it a try because it was actually a lot of fun to make! And if you really love sweet coffee drinks, like frappuccinos and blenders, you may really enjoy it! This recipe gets a 7/10 from me!
