Beabadoobee’s third studio album, “This Is How Tomorrow Moves,” garnered much deserved attention and praise from the media since its release on August 9, 2024. The album has themes of “girlhood” as well as songs detailing her past relationships, specifically her very recent and public breakup with ex-boyfriend Soren Harrison, whose name is featured as a song title on her 2019 EP “Loveworm.” “This is How Tomorrow Moves” uses the acoustic guitar and a wide array of drum medleys to give the songs a head-swaying effect. Beabadoobee is an artist known for her dreamy bedroom-pop style and catchy lyrics. Her last two albums, “Beatopia” and “Fake It Flowers” did amazingly as well, being especially popular in the female, young adult crowd. I really love this album, and after having a month to listen to and ponder over the fourteen songs on the album, I’ve been able to categorize the songs sonically, lyrically, and, most importantly, based on the level of stuck-in-my-headedness.
The songs at the bottom of my list, only because they didn’t wow me, are “Girl Song,” “One Time,” “Coming Home,” “A Cruel Affair” and “Everything I Want,” but these songs are still all very good! “Girl Song” is a song where Bea delves further into what it means to be insecure for her, and how some mornings she sees a completely different person than the day before. I love the message of the song because I feel like many teenage girls can relate to exactly these feelings, but for me, I felt like the song didn’t have much gusto or it sounded a lot like her other stuff from previous albums. The same goes for the songs “One Time,” “A Cruel Affair,” and “Coming Home,” which I really liked, but both songs felt as though they belonged on her previous albums. “Everything I Want” is the last of the songs that I wasn’t in love with. It’s a song that details how Bea doesn’t need any sort of distraction from her relationship because she’s so happy in it. This was just one of the songs that I find myself skipping as I’ve listened to it. It just never stuck!
Some songs that I do find myself coming back to, but aren’t quite my favorites, are “Tie My Shoes,” “Real Man,” “Post,” and “This Is How It Went.” I really liked “Tie My Shoes” for its guitar! I found the melody and chord progression of the guitar very soothing and pretty! The same goes for “Real Man,” which also has a very fun guitar and drum pattern; it’s almost jazzy! I also think it’s the most unique song on the album. “Post” and “California” are songs I like for their punk sound. The song “Post” reminds me of the genre “midwest emo,” and I can appreciate Beabadoobee’s, dare I say, successful attempt at combining the genre with her own indie sound. “This Is How It Went” was just a really cute love song about how her and her current boyfriend came to have the relationship they have. What can I say, I’m a sucker for cute love songs.
Now, on to my favorites! These songs really resonated with me and were almost immediate likes from my first listen-through. These songs are “Take a Bite,” “Ever Seen,” “The Man Who Left Too Soon,” and most importantly, “Beaches.” To start, “Take A Bite” is a very good track one for the album because it definitely sets the tone for the rest of the songs and the album as a whole. This is one of the catchiest songs on the album in my opinion. It’s a very easy song to find yourself bopping your head to, and Bea’s voice is mesmerizing due to its blend with the instruments. “Ever Seen” is a beautiful love song illustrating her love for her partner. Throughout the song, she switches from thinking of the sweet moments she’s had in her new relationship to thinking of all the mistakes she has made in past relationships. I found that the lyrics being her inner dialogue rather than her just singing about a situation or problem very interesting and cool. “The Man Who Left Too Soon” is simply just a very beautiful song. The chords of the guitar are very homey sounding. This song sounds like being a little kid to me. There is a whimsical feel to the song due to its interruption of the guitar by a flute melody, which sounds kind of like it belongs in “The Lord Of The Rings” movies. I think that is why I connect this song to being little; I feel like it’s the type of song that played in my head when I pretended to be a fairy as a kid. Last, but most definitely not least, is the song “Beaches.” This song reminds me of being on the West Coast somewhere. I hate to be so literal, but it truly feels like walking along a beach. This song has been on repeat for me since the album’s release! There’s just something about the chorus that I find so catchy, mainly due to Beabadoobee’s talent for making the lyrics come to life. It’s been my favorite song to listen to for the entirety of September so far.
If Beabadoobee wasn’t on your radar before reading this article, she should be now. Her music is amazing for almost any feeling or occasion. I can listen to her while I do homework, go to sleep, blast music on a late-night drive, or even just as background music while I do chores. The songs off of this album have definitely made additions to my pre-existing playlists, and you should consider having a listen; or even adding some songs to a few playlists yourself!
