The girls varsity volleyball team won their way to state Wednesday after defeating Kearney High School in the playoffs. The team started off on a great foot, winning their first set 20-25. Their second and third sets went just as well, 22-25 and 17-25, giving the team a clean win and a trip to state.

This is not the only accomplishment the girls volleyball team achieved that day, as sophomore Madi Woodin broke the state record for the number of seasonal assists. Woodin had 1,333 assists this season, breaking Ashley Petak’s record from 2004.

“I couldn’t have broken the record without my amazing teammates,” said Woodin. “But I think that it’s cool that the record was set the year that I was born and hasn’t been broken in those 15 years.”

Woodin’s teammates are feeling nothing but pride in their teammate.

“We are so proud of Madi because she is such a hard worker and she deserves that award. She’s an awesome player and so selfless and she contributes so much to this team,” said sophomore Kylie Weeks, “Plus, breaking a state record gives us lots of confidence and energy to finish our season strong at state!”

The team’s close bond is one of the main reasons for their success.

“My favorite part about being a part of the volleyball team is my teammates and coaches. Everyone is family and we’re always there for each other.” said Weeks.

The team will be heading to state next week on November 7th and 8th, so make sure to show up and support our amazing volleyball team.

“We are confident for state, but want to take one point at a time, one set at a time, one match at a time, so we can be the most successful we can possibly be,” said Weeks. “We have been working hard in practices, so we are ready for whatever each team gives us.”
