Hamilton Review
Driving through the streets of downtown Omaha on a Tuesday evening, it’s not hard to miss the fact that every single parking spot is filled. There’s still 45 minutes left until the opening of the show, but I was forced to park a block away.
I shouldn’t have been surprised though. Tickets had been sold out for months. Everyone wants to see Hamilton.
Hamilton is about the life of Alexander Hamilton and his role in The Revolutionary War. From beginning to end, the musical tells the story of Hamilton’s orphan-hood, transition from Nevis to New York, his political rise, and his family life. It takes an interesting spin on our history, keeping it engaging.
The line moved much quicker than expected. Being opening night, I thought my sister and I would be in line forever. Luckily for us, that wasn’t the case.
The staff that worked the event truly helped to make the night such a success. They kept things moving smoothly. In a matter of 15 minutes, we had made it inside, checked in, through the souvenir line, and to our seats (which happened to be on the top floor of the Orpheum…). I could tell that the production wasn’t going to disappoint.
The performers had the audience enraptured from the very beginning. They sang the ENTIRE time. There wasn’t a single word of dialogue spoken. If you could hear it, it was in song.
Even from the top row, the audio was unreal. After listening to the soundtrack on repeat for much longer than I care to admit, I had pretty high expectations as to what the performance would sound like.
They delivered near flawlessness.
The choreography was beautiful. When background dancers were featured, I was surprised to see that they didn’t pull attention away from the main attraction. They were subtle, but essential. It added immensely.
The amount of emotion that was put into the performance was quite obvious. You could tell that the performers truly wanted to be there. They were passionate about everything they did.
Hamilton was the first traveling Broadway show that I’d ever personally seen. I wasn’t really quite sure what to expect. Having been to two shows on Broadway, my concern was that I would be bored.
I’d seen the best of the best. I didn’t know how well this performance would compare. It turns out that it is just as good.
Overall, seeing Hamilton was a dream come true. I couldn’t have been happier with the production.
I would strongly suggest seeing this performance if possible. There are a few profanities, however, so I wouldn’t necessarily deem it material for a family outing.
My sister and I ended up walking back to the car feeling extremely satisfied with life. The production of Hamilton turned our average Tuesday night into one to remember.
