As the chilly weather begins to set in and winter pitches its tent, people begin looking for a good excuse to stay curled up inside, watching television and drinking hot chocolate. For television providers, the new season means a new show, attempting to take advantage of the cold weather as much as possible. Lucky for the human race, NBC released quite a show. New Amsterdam, having premiered September 25, has captivated Americans once again.

Taking place in modern-day New York, New Amsterdam features the transformation of a public hospital,the people in it, and the world around it. When new doctor Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) comes in and takes over, he strives to make the place less of a “money maker” and more of a “people saver”. Within the first day on the job, he fires the entire cardiac surgery team because they were in it for the wrong reason: money. Little faith was placed in Goodwin, seeing that he had ran a tiny hospital up in Chinatown… that didn’t last. Ironically,in a matter of weeks Goodwin has the entire place functioning more efficiently.

While rebuilding the entirety of the hospital structure, Goodwin still struggles with the everyday challenges of life. He has a family to maintain, and job to keep, and a health to stay on-top of. During the majority of the first season, Max lives separately from his pregnant wife (Lisa O’Hare). Being a full time doctor has financial perks of course, however, it begins to plague his marriage. It becomes a simultaneous battle of helping the community and convincing his wife that he’s still in love with her.

New Amsterdam does an amazing job of capturing the lives of other characters as well as Max. Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) is the only doctor out of the dismissed cardiac team that is allowed to stay. On top of that, he is made head of the cardiac wing. Dr. Laura Bloom (Janet Montgomery) heads the emergency department and is very good at her job. She’s almost a “jack-of-all-trades”, having skills in many different areas. These characters, among many others, create quite the plot, keeping viewers engaged at all times.

If individuals are looking for a touching, emotionally tugging series, New Amsterdam is very high up on the suggestion list. Along with the occasional tear-jerking scene, there is the underlying thrill of anticipation. There’s one common theme that drives the entire plot: Can they be saved? Whether it be patients, friends, family, or even themselves, the staff of the New Amsterdam hospital strive to save every last individual.

New Amsterdam airs Tuesday nights at 9pm on either HULU or NBC. Definitely a binge-worthy series, the story line will have new viewers hooked. NBC has outdone themselves yet again. The audience asked for a winter watch. NBC gave them a winning series.
