AP exam season just came to a close, and there is a lot to unpack. Whether it was shenanigans by students or mishaps by teachers, there was an astounding amount of stunts pulled during AP exams this year. Once again, multiple AP exams were leaked, but there are a lot more surprising things that happened this year compared to the past years. Throughout the years, students get more and more creative in their methods of cheating, and this year was no exception. Here are the ten most unhinged scandals that took place this exam season.
- Bee infestation during the AP United States Government and Politics (AP GOV) examin Texas: It began when students released bees in another part of the school, then the bees made their way to the testing room and raided it. Despite students being stung multiple times, students were told to remain in their seats and continue working on their exam. It was only stopped when a girl with a bee allergy alerted the office about what was happening.
- Code red alert during the AP GOV exam: A code red alert (active shooter in the school) was sounded six minutes into the exam at a school in Kansas which caused a panic which resulted in students hiding under their desks. It was later discovered that a sub, who thought the alarm was for emergencies, sounded it on accident because another student got hit in the head with a softball.
- Fireworks in the bathroom during the AP Calculus exams: Students in California who were not in an AP Calc exam attempted to try and get their friends’ testing room evacuated by setting off fireworks in the bathroom nearby. This did not work, however, because the entire school evacuated except for the students taking the Calc AB and BC exams, who stayed and finished their tests.
- A student may be facing assault charges over a red pen: A student wrote half his test in a red pen instead of blue or black and after being confronted by the proctor, instead of working together to find a reasonable solution, the student demanded that he be given a new test and the time be restarted. The proctors said no and attempted to take his test booklet and computer away. The student resisted and threw his computer at the proctor before storming out of the exam room.
- Two students flooded their exam room: Two students in California who weren’t taking the AP Calculus exam flooded the bathroom nearby the exam room where it then leaked into the testing room. Students still had to sit and take the exam as long as they could bear the smell and the water accumulating at their feet.
- Smudges on the windows during the AP Environmental Science exam: The president and the vice president of the green club at a school in Pennsylvania came into the testing room the day before the exam and wrote smudges on the windows saying “nature is mad” and “green is God”. However, on the day of the exam, it was just foggy enough that the messages appeared on the windows and the proctors assumed it was a cheating attempt. They were moved to another room and lost 15 minutes of their exam time, but their scores ended up getting cancelled anyways.
- A student taped her phone to her calculator lid during the AP Statistics exam: A student in New York brought two calculators to the AP Stats exam, except one was a calculator lid with her phone taped inside. She successfully got away with it during the entire test, but was later reported by her best friend because they got waitlisted to the same college.
- A student hid her phone in her hair during the AP English Language and Composition Exam: A student in Illinois stashed her phone in her hair during the AP Lang exam and pulled it out during the written portion because the proctor had fallen asleep. She would’ve gotten away with it, but she dropped her phone on the floor, which woke the proctor and she then got caught.
- A student is suing his AP Biology teacher: A student in Maryland is planning to sue his AP Bio teacher after storming out of the exam room mid-test. There was a series of questions over gel-electrophoresis, which he did not know, and his teacher had assured him that if anything went wrong, he would be able to take the makeup exam. He is not able to take the makeup exam, however, due to his behavior and is going to sue his teacher.
- Students got into a fight over the new Pope during the AP World History exam: Two students in Alabama got into a fight during the AP World exam because they had placed bets on who would be elected as the next Pope. There was a lot of screaming and distraction as a result and both students were kicked out with their scores therefore being cancelled.
