As we ease into winter break, many Elkhorn South students welcome the much-needed break from school to introduce all the fun festivities, family gatherings, and time off from the daily grind that is being a student. However, this time of year can also bring unique mental health challenges. Although its the “Most wonderful time of the year” Shortend days, colder weather, and heightened expectations can lead to feelings of stress, loneliness and anxiety, and it is important to know that you for sure are not the only one experiencing not so Cheery feelings this time of year. Mental Health is extremely important to prioritize during times away from school to ultimately improve your life inside and outside of the classroom.
-
- Set Realistic Expectations: Some of the most common worries during the holiday season include heightened expectations of what a “perfect holiday” looks like. Setting realistic expectations is essential, instead of focusing on what your holiday could be, try to take a step back and focus on what truly matters to you and your loved ones, after all the most precious gift you can give your friends or family is your own time.
- Stay Connected: While some may relish the time spent with family and friends, others might find the holiday season as a time of great stress and anxiety and oftentimes lonely. If you are feeling isolated or have the feeling someone you know is experiencing this feeling always try to check in. One quick call or text to stay connected with the people in your life could completely change the course of someone’s day or week! Staying connected can ultimately foster a different sense of belonging, especially to those who struggle with feelings of isolation.
- Prioritize You!: School, as everyone knows it, can be extremely stressful at many times, so use this time to focus on you! Take time this holiday to engage in the activities that you enjoy, bake a cake, or even do nothing if that’s what floats your boat. Taking time to focus on yourself is crucial to your mental health and you should always be your top priority.
All in All, the holiday season can be hard to navigate through, but just always know that it is okay to experience Not-So-Merry feelings at this time of year. If you or anyone that you know of struggles with these feelings know that you are not alone.
