This year, a new started at Elkhorn South. There used to be a Spanish club a couple of years ago, but no one really knew about it, so a new one started. The club president, Shrimayi Gillella, started the club because of her love for Spanish and she wanted to minor in spanish. Anna Shatel, vice president, talks about how she loves the Spanish club because it’s not just speaking, but actually exploring the culture.
“I love Spanish, but I don’t always love the class. Here in the club, we get to do fun activities and learn more about the culture regarding Spain and mexico” said Anna Shatel.
Other club members like Neve Murphy and Adi Pemberton, joined the club because they wanted to learn more than just learning spanish. Even though some of the members aren’t in Spanish class, they have joined a Spanish club so they can further explore Spanish culture.
Oscar Miranda is the Spanish club sponsor and he gets to teach the kids how to salsa dance. He is a pro at it and the students have so much fun learning the hard moves. The students come up with ideas, like salsa dancing, making papel de picado, and doing activities for dia de los muertos. This is a student-led club and they hope to get more students involved in Spanish culture.
Even though it is only the first year of this club, there are about 20 students already. There is a social media found on instagram that gives videos of the students at the meetings. The meetings are held every two weeks on a friday. They try to meet up for special holidays in Spain and mexico. They hope to get more people involved because it is a special club that helps students learn more than just a language and actually like the culture.
