It’s family pizza night, and you need help figuring out where to go. With so many staple options like GodFather’s, Zios, Dominos, and Cops it’s difficult to branch out or try something different. These options are good, but they sometimes lack originality and a wow factor. Therefore, I am pleased to introduce you to a hidden gem: Williamsburg Pizza.
Omaha native Aaron McCann moved to New York City with a dream to open his very own pizza place. He achieved this in 2012 with chef and co-owner Nino Coniglio, who was once a champion in the fierce competition of the Food Network’s “Chopped.” This dream took shape with the name of Williamsburg, which was the neighborhood in Brooklyn where it was first located. A couple of years later McCann chose to go back to his roots and bring the New York Style Pizza to Omaha. Today, Williamsburg spans 5 locations across New York and our very own location here in Nebraska.
Sides: Usually I do not get sides at pizza places however, for Williamsburg’s meatballs, I make an exception. The side of meatballs consists of eight homemade meatballs, mozzarella, pecorino romano, parmigiano-reggiano, basil, and marinara, and is a great portion of food. These are an absolute must; a different but perfect compliment to a piece of pizza.
Grandma: Starting off strong is a fantastic margarita pizza. This grandma square crust is a particular favorite in my house. It’s a thick crust with pecorino, basil, parmigiano-reggiano, olive oil, garlic, homemade fresh mozzarella, and tomato sauce. I always appreciate the tangy sauce and zesty flavor of a margarita pizza and this particular pie is not sparing on either.
Vegetarian: This pizza is also a grandma square crust and is truly decadent with spinach, red peppers, onions, and artichoke hearts. The artichoke hearts are a little more sparse than I would like but they still contribute to the juicy and veggie-filled flavor. In my opinion, the addition of mushrooms would make it truly over the top, but it is still a fantastic option for veggie lovers.
Cup & Char Grandma: Now, I am personally not a big pepperoni fan, but this one rings up as a classic. The cup and charred pepperoni add a nice spice and are cooked to perfection. The overall pizza is less greasy than I would have expected, which I appreciate. greatly.
Sofia Loren: This particular pie is what keeps me coming back to Williamsburg. It consists of mozzarella, parmigiano-reggiano, marinated sliced tomatoes, garlic, and basil. The pizza itself is a Brooklyn roundcrust which is on the thinner side and with massive slices perfect for folding. Sofia Lauren truly checks all my boxes. It is absolutely superb with plenty of tomatoes, cheese, and herbs to achieve the perfect composition.
The next time you are stumped about where to order your pizza from, I urge you to branch out and try what Williamsburg has to offer. You will not be disappointed!
