This summer marked the start of a Love Island series that we have never seen before, exploding into an even bigger bombshell than it already was. To put this into context, Love Island is a widely popular reality dating show that ships out new hot singles to find their true love through games, voting, and tests. Every summer the show premiers in mid-June, but not until recently, has it reached the masses as it did this summer. If you have been on TikTok recently, odds are you have heard about this season of Love Island. From dramatic recouplings to friendships that will last a lifetime, this season changed the way we view reality TV.
So, w hat made this season so different from the others? In short, many enjoyed the sense of friendship that this season brought, which had not previously been seen. Most popularly, the friendship dynamic between Leah, Serena, and JaNa, who many call PPG (short for Power Puff Girls). Since the show ended, the trio has not only grown in friendship but has also caught the attention of the media on several platforms. The three appeared on The Nikki & Brie Show podcast, discussing their experiences on Love Island USA. Leah Kateb, appearing on another podcast whin Tana Mongeau, and Brooke Schofield, went as far as to say she would “never do that again.”. Aside from the other drama involving the show, the three also made an appearance in Dunkin Coffee’s latest ad, flaunting their new relationships since the end of season 6. Ultimately, despite all the happenings on Love Island, the friendship between these three will only continue to grow as life goes on.
This season’s winning couple, Serena and Kordell, can also be credited for the show’s popularity. From the day they met, when they showed up to the villa in the same light green color, to the day that Kordell recoupled with another girl, it was never a question whether or not the two had feelings for one another. While they had a bit of a rocky road, their feelings for each other only developed as the show went on, and that is what made them so special. The two were spotted together at an NFL game, in which they watched Kordell’s older brother, Odell Beckahm Jr. play. Fans can also see them on TikTok, where they are most active.
Some islanders returned home in shock at the fact that they had gained so much public attention. Before starring in this season’s Love Island USA, Leah Kateb had only 12k followers, but as of right now, her follower count is up to 3.7 million. Similarly, Serena only had 3k followers before the show’s premiere and is now up to almost 2 million. However, not everyone was on the media’s good side. Andrea, a bombshell this season, was given so much backlash after appearing on many TikTok live trash-talking the show’s most popular Islanders. This is raising concerns amongst the public, as the show has already been credited for the loss of islanders Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, who were unable to shake online harassment.
All in all, Reality television has shown itself to not just be a short lived craze and is here to stay. And for Love Island season 7, who knows what to expect, or who will return, but for now all we know is season 6 will be incredibly hard to replace.
