Over the course of this winter, I spent a lot of time diving into new books. One book that has been getting a lot of attention recently is The Inheritance Games By: Jennifer Lynn Barnes. The book follows the main character Avery Grambs as she somehow inherites the entirety of a billionaires fortune that she has never heard of and is not related to whatsoever. The only catch is that she has to live in the Hawthorne Mansion (the billionaire’s home) with his four grandsons. Over the course of her stay she has to solve many puzzles and riddles to ultimately figure out what got her to where she is and how she inherited this guy’s money.
I would recommend this book to readers who love mystery novels. I gave this book a ⅖ stars only because mystery isn’t my favorite genre. I felt that many of the characters were one dimensional and I didn’t really connect with any of them all that much. I know I have read a good book when the book really makes me feel what the characters are feeling, or if one of the main characters dies, it actually makes me feel sad. In this book, if any one of the characters were to have died, I would not have cared one bit because I felt as if I didn’t really get to know them that well. I wish there was a heavier focus on getting to know the characters and their relationships with each other and less about the riddles they were trying to solve.
The story line however is very well thought out and witty. It is a fun read because the book is very unpredictable and the reader doesn’t know what is going to happen next. I have never heard a story line like this before so it was fun and different, and I didn’t really know what to expect. Overall, I think this book is a must read for people that really enjoy mystery and riddles, but a pass for readers that love good character development. This book is also part of a series, so if you do end up really liking it, make sure to check out the other books as well.
